David Barton is a well-known voice in the UK’s architectural community. For over a decade, he has been an active campaigner for traditional vernacular architecture and its resurgence across the country. His passion for restoration and preservation efforts stems from his belief that the built environment has a significant impact on the economy and the environment, as well as people’s sense of community and identity.

As a community campaigner, Barton has been involved in various restoration projects, from small-scale renovations to grander undertakings like the restoration of historic buildings. His tireless efforts, coupled with his expertise in traditional architecture, have helped him gain a wide following among those who share his ardour for conserving Britain’s architectural heritage.

David’s vision for the future is one that encompasses respect for local heritage and traditional design principles. He hopes to see legislation across the country that integrates vastly improved Design Codes for local areas. At the core of this vision, for David, is an appreciation of what makes each community unique and the realization that vernacular architecture is an essential part of the cultural identity of many communities.

For David, the importance of traditional architecture cannot be overemphasized. He is convinced that the future of British architecture lies in an appreciation for traditional design principles, and he encourages architects to draw inspiration from the past to come up with new and innovative ideas. He sees a future where sustainability is the norm, and traditional Design Code techniques will be at the forefront of efforts to create spaces that are beautiful, functional, and sustainable.
